Desert 59

There were also many old holes of various sizes in the wall but for some reason, this new hole seemed especially sinister. Maybe it was because many different insects swarmed inside, attracted by the dampness of the fresh earth. Most of them were harmless, but we also saw a couple of hardroaches, so we prudently stayed away from the hole.
"Sometimes I think you are somewhat right with your religion," I told newcomers.
"Maybe we were right, with our former religion," Omah replied. "Now we are citizens of Araks, and your religion became our religion."

There were also many/a lot of old holes of various sizes in the wall but for some reason (no comma) this new hole seemed especially sinister. Maybe it was because many different insects swarmed inside, attracted by the dampness of the fresh earth. Hi Oleks,

Out of interest, why did you say that to the newcomers? This is the only bit in your text that is not very clear to me.

Please see some of my comments

  • Maybe it was because many different insects swarmed inside - (as you are describing an ongoing event in the past, you should use the past continuous tense.) Maybe it was because many different insects were swarming / flying around inside.
  • "Sometimes I think you are somewhat right with your religion," I told newcomers. - "Sometimes I think you are somewhat right with your religion," I told the newcomers. (use the definite article, so we know which newcomers you are referring to)
  • and your religion became our religion - and your religion has become our religion
