Desert 81

The crowd of warriors steadily continued to advance. Very soon, I could already see their faces distorted with rage and madness. They were stoned from fairy-mushrooms, not otherwise. A person who smokes fairy-mushrooms loses the ability to make sound decisions, but his reaction becomes like that of a cat. I briefly recalled the words that I said beforehand: "only a madman can enter the burrows of a sandworm." Verily, only a madman.

Crikey Oleks!  Magic mushroom!  What next??  Well done for a good text.

The crowd of warriors steadily continued to advance. Very soon, I could already see their faces distorted with rage and madness. They were stoned from fairy-mushrooms [We call them 'magic mushrooms', not otherwise. A person who smokes fairy-mushrooms magic mushrooms loses the ability to make sound decisions, but his reaction becomes like that of a cat. I briefly recalled the words that I said beforehand: "only a madman can enter the burrows of a sandworm." Verily Truly, only a madman. [We don't really use 'Verily' any more]

Hi Oleks,

I absolutely loved this extract! Why on earth would you want to take magic mushrooms if you were a warrior though haha?

Ros has done a great job of evaluating your text.

I just have some feedback regarding your pronunciation...

  • When it comes to the "r" sound in English, I still feel that you need to make this softer. (Listen to me say these two words "warriors" and "burrows " and let me know if you have any questions. I would recommend watching a video like this for some more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipqDNqUDiMI

Hi Ed! Very well said about magic mushrooms and warriors :)))
Your Russian "r" is superb! Thank you for comment and audio. I began to better understand the difference thanks to your pronunciation of both options of "r".

Glad to hear that! Yes, I learn Spanish and the Russian "r" is similar to the Spanish one. Funnily enough I did start learning Russian when I was a small kid (about 8 or 9). We used to have friends stay with us who were from St Petersburg and they taught me some basis such as the names of animals (such as кошка-koshka and собака-sobaka) . Unfortunately, I never got round to actually forming proper sentences in Russian. I would definitely like to learn it in the future though!

My father and mother both speak it and have lived abroad in St. Petersburg and always say how beautiful it is there!

Regarding the pronunciation of /r/ in English, I suggest you take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WJAJ7Le-yM

The crowd of warriors steadily continued to advance. Very (I prefer ‘pretty soon’ here) soon, I could already see their faces distorted with rage and madness. They were stoned from fairy mushrooms (Also, magic mushrooms / You don’t need dash ‘-‘ here), not otherwise. A person who smokes (Also, ‘smoking’ instead of ‘who smokes’) fairy mushrooms loses the ability to make sound decisions, but and his reaction becomes like that of a cat. I briefly recalled the words that I said beforehand: "Only a madman can enter the burrows of a sandworm." Verily, only a madman.
