The active vocabulary of an average adult is estimated to range from 5,000 to 30,000 words. The passive one is several times larger: its volume ranges from 20,000 to 100,000 words. As a rule, vocabulary enrichment is most active before the age of 40. After that, this process slows down, and the vocabulary of most people remains practically unchanged until the end of life.
