Earthquakes

Even though there have been a lot of different natural disasters in Costa Rica, earthquakes have been the ones that shaped our lifestyle the most. This is because Costa Rica is part of the Ring of fire of the Pacific, a circular shaped region with an important amount of volcanoes. Communities within the ring of fire are supposed to face earthquakes frequently.

In Costa Rica, there are written record of damages produced by earthquakes from the 1800s. But the earthquake of 1910 in the city of Cartago became a main event in the country’s history. Around 700 people died back then, when the population was just 300 000 people. Authorities were forced to implement a Seismic construction code which banned the Bahareque house system (the most common building system back in that time) in favor of steel reinforced buildings.

Another important event was the Earthquake of Limon in 1991, the earthquake of highest magnitude in Costa Rica’s history occurred in the region less prone to earthquakes, causing 127 deaths, and millions of damages in buildings, bridges, streets and lifelines. Even today, the effects of this earthquake cost millions for farmers and residents of Sixaola city, where the coast rose a few meters over its original elevation causing floods and destroying crops. Flooding maps have been used in the zone in order to prevent more economic losses.

Earthquakes have been one of our hardest test costing several human lives and important economic losses. But we have advanced a lot preventing damages. Nowadays most earthquakes don’t cause significant damages or deaths.

Hi!

I am from Guatemala and also grew up with earthquakes. We have had some big activity recently. I am glad I'm in the UK and get to miss severe weather! It's just too cold or too hot or too rainy here.

Great effort! Muy bien hecho! Sigue adelante!

I leave you some corrections in pink.
