A) Flashcards and memorisation

Flashcards on Anki especially helped me to increase my vocabulary when I was very beginner. Now I have more than 7,000 words in Anki, and I repeat them every day. Simultaneously I started reading books. I think, without the vocabulary, you should not even start trying to talk, because all you can do is ask what's up or talk about the weather. And listening to videos also will not give anything if there is no vocabulary. Just recently, I started watching videos. I don’t listen to audio clips often, because without a picture it’s not so exciting.

Hi Oleks, well done. That is an interesting and informative piece of writing. How long have you been using Anki? Unfortunately, I have never tried the app, however, I am thinking about using it to improve my Spanish vocabulary.

A) Flashcards and Memorization

Flashcards on Anki especially helped me to increase my vocabulary when I was very an absolute beginner. Now I have more than 7,000 words in Anki, and I repeat them every day. Simultaneously, (A comma is needed) I started reading books. I think, without the vocabulary, you should not even start trying to talk, because all you can do is ask “What's up?” or talk about the weather. And listening to watching videos also will not give anything help either (“Also” is OK in informal speech, however, it is not standard in writing.) if there is no vocabulary. Just recently, I started watching videos. I don’t listen to audio clips often, because without a picture, (A comma is needed.) it’s not so exciting.

Hi, Aliakbar, thank you! I have been using Anki for about four years. I read books and write down new words in Anki. This is a good application for memorizing words, because they use spaced repetition.

Best regards, Oleks!

Hi Oleks,

I use Anki to learn languages and I find it very useful. I agree with you - the most important thing (when we begin learning a new language) we should start doing is learning new words and phrases. I also like the traditional method of writing the new words I learn down on small pieces of paper and sticking them on my wall. This reminds me of them when I come home each day. Have you tried this?

With regards to your written English, there is very little to correct. Aliakbar has already done a good job of doing this.

I would like to add the following.

1. Now I have more than 7,000 words in Anki - I would add the word "stored" to this sentence "Now I have more than 7,000 words stored in Anki".

2. and I repeat them every day  - You could also say "and I revise them every day".

3. And listening to videos  - In formal, written English, you should try to avoid beginning new sentences with the word "and". Instead you could say, "In addition to ___, "As well as ___ etc."

Hi, Edhutchins88! Thank you for your comment. It's very useful to learn new rules of English. I could hardly find them in our textbooks.

Thank you, Kjcoffin! Words "do" or "help" really sound more correct.

Hi Oleks!  I hadn't heard of Anki and I'll look at this as I'm always looking for ways to help my English students study in their free time!  Just a point - it's not possible to say "a very beginner" but you can say "very much a beginner" or, as Aliakbar says "an absolute beginner".  With the word "also" - It's fine to use this but watch where you place it.  It goes before a simple past or present tense verb but after the verb "to be" and any auxiliary or modal verbs.  So you would say "And listening to videos will also not do anything...."

Warm regards

Ros

Hi, Ros! Thank you for your comment! I didn't know where I should put "also", so your remark is very useful.

Sincerely yours, Oleks
