My first text in Elingora

Hi, my name is Isaac, I'm from Honduras and this is my first text in this platform.

I've just discovered Elingora, due to a friend, only two days ago and I really want to improve my english in the four different areas but even more in speaking and writing.

I study Electrical Engineering and, actually, I only need 6 more classes (I believe in some countries this is called 'credits')  to get the academic title. I have always learn english by myself except in two years of my high school where I was able to learn it in a good way because of a great teacher! All these years have been a little hard because I get a little scared in speaking (or even writing) english and that's the barrier which impede me to get better in this important language. So, I hope to really improve my english through this website and, if you're interested in learn spanish, you can contact me, I'll be pleasure to help u!

Thank's for reading and please, make me know all the mistakes done it haha!

Have a nice day!

Hello Isaac,

Welcome to Lingora. Great to have you here. You've come to the right place if you want to improve your writing and speaking skills in English! My advice to you would be to post as many texts and audios as you can, so native English speakers like me can help you.

It's natural to get a little nervous and uncomfortable when speaking another language. However, the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

I learn Spanish too, so let me know if you would be interested in arranging a language exchange with me smiley

With regards to your text, here are just a few things I've noticed.

1. I study Electrical Engineering and, actually, I only need 6 more classes (Actually in English means "en realidad" in Spanish. As you are talking about your current situation, I would say something like "I study Electrical Engineering and at the moment, I only need 6 more classes"

2. I have always learn english by  I have always learned English by myself.

3. I get a little scared in speaking I get a little scared when speaking...

4. that's the barrier which impede me to get better -  that's the barrier which impedes me to get better...

5. if you're interested in learn spanish, - if you're interested in learning Spanish. (as this is an ongoing process, use the gerund form)

6. I'll be pleasure to help u! (It'll be a pleasure to help you) (Be careful when using informal language like "u". It's fine to use it when speaking to friends. However, if you are writing a formal letter or doing a job application, it would not look good.

7. make me know all the mistakes "Let me know all the mistakes I've made" (In English, you let someone know something)

I have always learned English for myself except for two years at high school...

All these years have been a little hard because I get a little scared in speaking (or even writing) English and that's the barrier which impedes me to get better [my progress] in this important language. So, I hope to really improve my English through this website and, if you're interested in learn[ing] Spanish, you can contact me, I[t]'ll be [a] pleasure to help u!

Thank's for reading and please, make me know all the mistakes done it haha!

I love your writing style and your English is really excellent.  Just remember to use a capital letter for English and Spanish (and any other language).  After "interested in" we use the gerund or "ing" form of the next verb.  So: ..."interested in reading classic literature" or "interested in going to the movies".

I look forward to your next post!

Ros

Hey,

Thanks for this!

Overall, your style is great!

I've just made a few comments in addition to the ones made above:

- You didn't need to use the word 'actually' in your third sentence. I've noticed that people tend to overuse this word to emphasise the truth of certain points, but I don't think it's necessary

- This is a matter of personal preference but while studying English Language at university, I was told by a lecturer of mine to try to avoid using brackets as much as possible. This may apply more to formal writing, but I think we can explain things better if we omit brackets from our writing in general. For example, you could have said: 'I study Electrical Engineering and I only need to take six more classes, which are known in some countries as 'credits', to get the academic title'.

'Over the years, learning English has been a little difficult for me because I get worried about speaking, and even writing extracts in the language, and that's the barrier which impedes my development in fluency.'

- Have a look at some guidance on when to use commas in English as you didn't need quite as many as what you have used

Thanks,

Becky :)

Hi Isaac. Welcome to Lingora! Here, you can improve your English skills quickly. All you have to do is post regularly and read the comments carefully to know how you could enhance your English.

Regarding your text, it is really well-written. However, I would like to suggest some tweaks to make it even better.

  • My First Text In Elingora -> My First Text on Elingora (Think of the website as something displayed on the screen.)
  • I have always learn English by myself. -> I have always learned English by myself. (The tense is present perfect and here is how to make a sentence: Subject + have/has + Verb (p.p.) + (Object)).
  • … help u. -> … help you. (Using u to mean you is very informal and is mostly used in text messages.)

Also, remember that mistakes are different from errors. A 'mistake' is usually accidental, you know it is wrong. Otherwise, an 'error' is usually made due to the lack of knowledge. If you review your text yourself and find out where you need to change, then you have made mistakes, however, if you cannot find where you need to change, then you have made errors.

Best of luck to you! Keep up the good work!
